BC Bonsai Society held its highly successful 18th annual show and sale at the Surrey City Hall Saturday, June 13th. Over 400 people attended including Surrey mayor Brenda Locke who said in part: “It was wonderful to see the creativity, skill and dedication that goes into this unique art form and to learn more about the work the society does to share and promote bonsai in our community.” Over 50 amazing Bonsai trees were shown by club members while Bonsai trees and materials were on sale from 14 venders locally and from Vancouver Island. It was a unique opportunity to share with the general public the Bonsai art form developed by our members and to chat with those dedicated to growing wonderful trees. Many thanks to the City of Surrey for our Cultural Grant and the vendors and the general public who donated so that we can continue to showcase Bonsai.
We appreciate Kanta Nakajima for providing a demonstration on detailed wiring of our club's Juniper Bonsai during the event. You can view the development of our tree here.
We extend our gratitude to all our vendors. Particularly noteworthy was the esteemed Anton Nijhuis from Vancouver Island, who sold out three tables of collected shore pines and mountain hemlock yamadori within the first few hours of the event! Nakajima Bonsai also offered some remarkable specimens for sale at various price points. Attendees could find everything from bonsai soil, pots, pre-bonsai material, and satsuki azalea cuttings to fully completed bonsai specimens.
This was our 18th Bonsai Show and our biggest event yet. We hope to see you all again next year!
